The Record and Red Cents receive state awards
Goshen College students involved with campus publications were recently honored for their work at the Indiana Collegiate Press Association (ICPA) competition for print media.
ICPA presented awards at its annual conference on April 11 at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. Among the winners were staff members of The Record, the student newspaper, and Red Cents, the student literary arts journal.
Eleven staff members of The Record received 15 individual awards in the division III newspaper category. Award winners include:
First Place:
- Tony Miller, a 2014 communication graduate from Goshen, received first place for Best Sports News Story with “Men’s soccer parts ways with Tavi.”
- Carina Zehr, a 2014 environmental science and sociology graduate, received first place for Best Opinion Column with “The curious incident of the duck in the nighttime.”
- The Record staff also won first place in the Best Pullout/Wrap Section for “Portraits of the Potawatomi.”
Second Place:
- Quinn Brenneke, a 2014 public relations graduate, received second place for Best Staff Editorial with “For the record.”
- Elizabeth Franks-North, a junior English major from Greensboro, North Carolina, and The Record staff received second place for Best Single Issue with the Oct. 31, 2014 issue of The Record.
- Chenoa Mitchell, a 2014 public relations graduate, received second place for Best Entertainment Column with “Goshen’s Art House offers a breath of fresh air to movie lovers.” Mitchel also received second place for Best Sports Column with “Olympic figure skating team event thrills enthusiast.”
- Alia Munley, a senior art major from Mundelein, Illinois, received second place for Best Photo Essay or Picture Story with “Play Continues.”
Third Place:
- Quinn Brenneke received third place for Best Overall Design with the April 17, 2014 issue of The Record.
- Elizabeth Franks-North received third place for Best Front Page with the Oct. 23, 2014 issue of The Record.
- Elizabeth Franks-North and Hannah Sauder, a junior communication major from Lititz, Pennsylvania, received third place for Best Breaking News Reporting with “Students carrying mattresses for solidarity.”
- Kolton Nay, a senior English writing major from Dover, Ohio, received third place for Best Sports Feature Story with “Runners crunch a marathon six-pack in six days.”
- Roberto Ortiz, a first-year music and English major from Elkhart, Indiana, received third place for Best News Photo.
- Luis Perez Lerchundi, a junior journalism major from Pamplona, Spain, received third place for Best Feature Story with “A factory shift makes possible a college degree.”
- Hannah Sauder received third place for Best Photo Essay or Picture Story with “Students perform in fall choral concert.”
- Mandy Schlabach, a senior art major from Tucson, Arizona, received third place for Best Feature Photo with “Black students lift voices in story and song.”
The awards cover the calendar year 2014, during which time Quinn Brenneke served as editor during the spring semester and Elizabeth Franks-North during the fall semester. Duane Stoltzfus, professor of communication, and Kyle Schlabach, assistant professor of English, served as the paper’s advisors.
Red Cents, a literary and arts journal edited and published by Goshen College students, took several honors for its 2014 edition. For the literary magazine awards, students competed among all colleges and universities in Indiana, regardless of size.
- Emma Gerig, a 2014 interdisciplinary graduate, received second place for Best Cover Design with the 2014 Red Cents issue.
- Kate Stoltzfus, a 2014 English writing and journalism major from Goshen, received third place for Best Short Story with “This is How You Leave Us.”
- Lauren Treiber, a 2014 peace, justice and conflict studies graduate, received third place for Best Free Verse Poem with “The Crown, the Diamond House.”
- Kate Yoder, a senior art and English writing major from Elkhart, Indiana, received third place for Best Hand-Drawn Illustration for “Algebraic Owl.”
Kate Stoltzfus and Kate Yoder served as editors for the 2014 Red Cents edition. Ann Hostetler, professor of English, and Jessica Baldanzi, associate professor of English, co-advise the magazine.
The association’s annual contest recognizes the best student work in Indiana college newspapers and other publications. The Record is entered in Division III, for colleges with a non-daily publication and an enrollment of 2,000 or fewer full-time students, and Red Cents competes in a single division against all colleges and universities in Indiana.
