NatureFest at Merry Lea
Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center, Farmstead Site 

Take a hike, roast marshmallows or go canoeing at Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center’s annual spring festival, NatureFest, on Friday, May 1, 6:30 p.m. through Saturday, May 2, 2 p.m. NatureFest includes the Turtle Trot 5-K run, hikes for all ages and interests, and booths with hands-on interactive nature activities. Cost: Kids through college students pay just $5, which includes Saturday breakfast and lunch. Adults pay $5 for Friday night only; $10 for Saturday only (includes lunch); or $20 for both days. Participants may pay at the door, but are asked to register online, or call 260-799-5869.


Friday, May 1
Graduate and Continuing Studies Open House
4-7 p.m., Newcomer Center Room 19

Adults interested in graduate and continuing studies programs are invited to visit Goshen College for an open house to learn more about Goshen’s different programs. Program directors, financial aid and admission representatives will be on site to answer questions about costs and provide transcript evaluations. Stop by before Goshen’s First Friday events for refreshments and a chance at door prizes.

Performing Arts Series: A Prairie Home Companion
5:45 p.m., Music Center’s Sauder Concert Hall

Garrison Keillor will return to the Sauder Concert Hall stage as part of the Performing Arts Series to present this popular radio show, which airs on more than 500 public radio stations around the world. The live broadcast will include guest performances by the Goshen College Chamber Choir and Lily & Madeleine, a folk pop sister duo from Indianapolis. The show will follow its usual format using skits, comedy, monologues and music.

Local NPR affiliate WVPE will host a simulcast and after party featuring live video feed of the sold out show, held in a large tent on the lawn adjacent to the Goshen College Music Center. The simulcast will include hors d’oeuvres and a dance party afterwards with the WVPE ‘house band,’ The Elwood Splinters Blues Band.

GC Juried Student Exhibition Reception
1-2:30 p.m., Music Center’s Hershberger Art Gallery

A juried selection of work by students in art classes over the past year will make up this show. A reception will be held at 1-2:30 p.m. with an awards ceremony and raffle at 1:30. The exhibit will run from May 3 through May 19.

Concert: The Steel Wheels
7:30 p.m., Music Center’s Sauder Concert Hall

The Steel Wheels, an Americana band with Mennonite roots, will return to Goshen College on Friday, May 8 for a concert in the Music Center’s Sauder Concert Hall. The Steel Wheels have enthralled audiences across the country with their heady brew of original, soulful mountain music for almost a decade. Based in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, the band blends old-time musical traditions with their own original sound.

Rieth Chamber Series: Opus 41 tenth anniversary concert feat. Kevin Vaughn, organist

In May 2005, the Goshen College Music Center dedicated its new Taylor & Boody pipe organ, “Opus 41.” Now, 10 years later, we invite you back to celebrate its anniversary. Kevin Vaughn, Goshen College’s organ instructor and director of music and organist at St. Vincent De Paul Church in Elkhart, will present a recital of organ works selected to highlight this magnificent instrument. Vaughn’s program will feature works by J.S. Bach, Gaston Litaize, Anton Heiller, and more. Be a part of the celebration!

Faculty Recital Series: Kathryn Schmidt

Goshen College and Community School of the Arts instructor of piano Kathryn Schmidt will present a solo piano recital in Rieth Recital Hall. Schmidt’s program will include Beethoven’s Piano Sonata in A-flat, Op. 26; Liszt’s Three Sonnets of Petrarch; Chopin’s Sonata in B minor, Op. 58; and Prokofief’s Visions Fugitives, Op. 22.

The Hershberger Art Gallery will display ceramic work by Dennis Maust, a potter and teacher from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. A reception is tentatively scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 27, 2-3:30 p.m. followed by an artist talk in the gallery.
