Merry Lea Sustainable Farm to host open house
Event: Merry Lea Sustainable Farm annual open house
Date and Time: Friday, April 15 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Location: Merry Lea Sustainable Farm
Cost: Free and open to the public
The Merry Lea Sustainable Farm will hold its annual open house Friday, April 15 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. This year’s gathering features the recent film, Fencerows to Foodsheds by Janet Katz.
The film examines the way two Indiana communities are rebuilding their local foodsheds. One is Elkhart County and the other is Batesville, Ind., southeast of Indianapolis. One of the initiatives featured in the film is the Merry Lea Sustainable Farm and its Agroecology Summer Intensive. The nine-week summer program teaches undergraduates to grow food in ways that are healthy for local ecosystems.
Open house visitors can tour the Merry Lea Sustainable Farm, hear about volunteer and learning opportunities on site, meet others interested in growing local food, participate in games known as the Farm Olympics and enjoy a potluck supper, served at 6 p.m. A main dish stew will be provided; please bring a side dish.
A seed exchange will take place at 6:30 p.m. Bring saved or leftover vegetable, herb or flower seeds to share. The film showing will begin around 7. A campfire will be provided for those who prefer conversation.
There is no charge for the open house, but please RSVP to mlevents@goshen.edu by April 13 and bring a side dish for the meal if you are able.
