Merrill Krabill, professor of art at Goshen College, will present a sabbatical exhibition titled “Between Earth and Sky: exploring loss and redemption” starting Sept. 25 through Nov. 6, 2016. A reception will take place on Sunday, Oct. 9 at 4:30, followed by an artist talk at 5:30 p.m. The exhibit, reception and talk are all free and open to the public.
Krabill’s pieces are sculptural mixed-media pieces made from clay, wood, photographs and other materials. Through these he explores patterns and forms that can be ways to understand the experience of life.
“Each of these pieces has a clay bird—very much of the earth, very mortal, probably dead or dying, still beautiful to me in its way,” Krabill said. “The images behind the sculptural piece usually have birds in flight somewhere. The challenge for me, visually and poetically, is to see them as part of the same moment, which, in reality, I think they are.”
Krabill has taught ceramics and photography at Goshen College for 15 years. He was an artist-in-residence at Togei no mori (Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park) in Shigaraki, Japan in 2005, and previously taught ceramics at Bethel College (Kansas) and Portland State University (Oregon). He graduated from Goshen College in 1979, and earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from Claremont Graduate University in 1986.
