Goshen College introduces new employees for 2011-12

GOSHEN, Ind. – Goshen College opens the 2011-2012 academic year with many new faces — and not just among new and transfer students. The college also is welcoming new employees, some of whom were hired and began their duties earlier in the year:

Allison Bailey is the men’s and women’s golf head coach. She received a degree in business administration at Trine University in Angola, Ind., and has worked at Glendarin Hills Golf Club in Angola, Ind., Elcona Country Club in Bristol, Ind., and was the head professional at Christiana Creek Country Club in Elkhart, Ind.

Norm Bakhitis the human resources director and assistant professor of psychology. He received a bachelor’s degree from Grace College and a master’s degree from Grace Theological Seminary. He has over 15 years of work experience in human resources, including being senior manager of global human resources for the Pharmaceutical International Division of Abbott Lab, and is a member of the Society for Human Resources Management.

Scott Barge is the director of assessment and institutional research. He is a 1999 graduate of Goshen College and holds a doctoral degree from Harvard University.

Sarah Bogen is the assistant for the Admission Office. She graduated in 2008 from Franklin University in Columbus, Ohio, and has previously worked as a receptionist for a physical therapy office and a dental office.

Carolyn Davis is an associate professor of nursing, focusing on pediatric nursing and pharmacology. She received a doctorate degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center and is a certified pediatric nurse practitioner. She has worked with high-risk adolescents at the Por Vida Academy Charter High School in San Antonio, Texas.

Amy DeCelles is an assistant professor of mathematics. She received her doctorate degree from the University of Minnesota and has been a recitation leader, lecturer, course material developer and an orientation facilitator for new graduate and undergraduate teaching assistants.

Fabio dos Santos is the head coach of the women’s soccer team. He has coached men’s and women’s soccer at Waldorf College in Forest City, Iowa, Oakland City (Ind.) University and Decatur Central High School in Indianapolis, and was a professional soccer player in Brazil.

David Fayne is a new member of the custodial department of the college’s physical plant.

Liz Fisher is the administrative assistant for the Career Services Office and Campus Ministries Office. She graduated from Indiana University Fort Wayne in 2008 with a degree in marketing, and previously worked as a marketing assistant for Ivy Tech Community College in South Bend, Ind.

Hannah Gerig Meyer is the graphic designer for the Public Relations Office. A 2008 graduate of Goshen College, she has worked as a freelance graphic designer and artist and at Bethany Christian Schools as an art teacher.

Daniel Godfrey is the skilled trades technician in the college’s physical plant. He received an associate’s degree from Ivy Tech with a certificate in heating, ventilating and air conditioning, and has worked for seven years with various heating and cooling companies.

Randy Gunden is the executive director of adult and online programs. A 1975 graduate of Goshen College, he received his master’s and all-but-dissertation doctorate degree from the University of Notre Dame. He served as associate professor of economics and business at GC from 1985 to 2003, as associate vice president and vice president of the College of Professional Studies at the Indiana Institute of Technology from 2003 to 2007 and as the dean of the School of Adult Studies and executive director of the Office of Nontraditional Studies at Bethel College, Mishawaka, Ind., from 2008 to 2011.

DaVonne Harris is the resident director of Yoder Hall and director of student activities. She graduated from Bethel College, Mishawaka, Ind., has served as an education adviser at Ivy Tech and has experience with adolescent first-time criminal offenders, working on conflict resolution and academic strategies to foster improved positive decision-making.

Kyle Hufford is an assistant professor of communication and the general manager for Goshen’s new video production initiative, FiveCore Media. He holds an undergraduate degree in communication from Indiana Wesleyan University and a master’s degree in digital storytelling from Ball State University. He worked as promotions manager for WIWU TV-51 in Marion, Ind., and has several years of professional experience in producing and directing video productions.

Chris Kennel is the administrative assistant for international education. She graduated from Eastern Mennonite University and has previously worked in the computer science/ITS departments at the University of Iowa and Everence, and in human resources and benefits administration with Monaco Coach Corporation.

Dan Koop Liechty is the director of admission. A 1988 Goshen College graduate, he received a master’s and doctorate degree from Michigan State University. In the past he served as GC’s assistant director of admission, head of guidance and counseling at Woodstock School in India and, most recently, as dean of international programs at Northwood University in Midland, Mich.

Al Mackowiak is the director of campus safety and security. He has served the city of Goshen on the Goshen Police Force for the past 35 years, and during that time has been recognized for 14 years of service and leadership in the field of child abuse prevention and has been awarded for serving on the board of the Women’s Resource Center, serving victims of domestic violence.

Stephanie Miller is the women’s basketball head coach and athletic assistant. A 1997 graduate of Michigan State University, she has spent the past 12 years as a high school teacher and coach, as well as working camp and Amateur Athletic Union circuits.

Andrew Moeggenborg is an assistant professor of theater and the Umble Center technical director. He graduated from Eastern Illinois University in 2008 and received a master’s degree from West Virginia University in 2011. He has previously worked at the Contemporary American Theater Festival and with the Des Moines Metropolitan Opera.

Janine Ostergren is the administrative assistant for the Academic Resource & Writing Center. A 1986 graduate of Goshen College, she has worked at West Virginia University, Northern Arizona University and Assembly Mennonite Church and has experience as a volunteer with several organizations, including Mountain Charter School, Flagstaff High School and First Congregational Church of Flagstaff.

Jeremy Pope is an admission counselor and a 2011 graduate of Goshen College. While at Goshen, he studied physical education and sport management and was a member of GC’s men’s basketball team for four years.

Karla Santiago is an admission counselor and a 2010 graduate of Goshen College. While at Goshen, she studied music education. She recently returned from serving for a year in Bolivia as a music teacher through the Serving and Learning Together (SALT) program with Mennonite Central Committee.

Laura Yoder is an associate professor of sustainability and environmental education. After graduating from Messiah College, she continued on to receive a master’s degree in international agriculture and rural development at Cornell University and a doctorate in forestry and environmental studies at Yale University. She also has extended experience working and researching in Southeast Asia.

The new adjunct professors this year are: Dawn Detweiler in the Psychology Department; Jordan Kauffman in the Art Department; Booker Morris in the Nursing Department (graduate program); Cynthia Padgett in the Education Department; Judith Sadler in the Nursing Department; Julie Schatz in the Psychology Department; Teneesa Stuckey in the Nursing Department. Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center of Goshen College also has two interns this year, Annalisa Harder and Amy Hartzell.
