With rhythmic beats that envelop the entire audience, Japanese drumming troupe Yamato will thrill audience members during a Performing Arts Series concert on Friday, Feb. 9 at 7:30 p.m. in Goshen College Music Center’s Sauder Concert Hall.
Founded in 1993 in Nara, Japan, ‘the land of Yamato” is said to be the birthplace of Japanese culture. These highly-trained performers travel the world over with Japan’s traditional Wadaiko drums － made of animal skin and ancient trees, some of which are more than 400 years old －recreating the pulse, or “Shin-On,” which is carried down from antiquity and resonates within all bodies.
The Yamato drummers are exuberant performers, presenting drumming as physical theatre, with a mix of athleticism and showbiz, leaping from drum to drum while flourishing their drumsticks. The group’s phenomenal skill applies a ferocity somewhere between the seriousness of samurai and the crazed exhibitionism of heavy-metal rock drummers.
