Faculty recital series to feature Susan and Lee Dengler Feb. 4

GOSHEN, Ind. – Goshen College Assistant Professors Susan Dengler, soprano, and Lee Dengler, baritone, will perform a recital of solos and duets on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 7:30 p.m. in Rieth Recital Hall of the Goshen College Music Center. The couple has appeared both individually and together in operas, oratorios and recitals since they met as undergraduates at West Chester (Pa.) University. Lee and Susan are ministers of music and arts at College Mennonite Church, on the campus of Goshen College in addition to service on the college’s music department faculty.
The recital will begin with three charming duets by Felix Mendelssohn – Herbstlied, Volkslied and Abendlied. Susan Dengler will follow with two selections from the oratorio repertoire, the tender “Blute nur du liebes Herz” from the “St. Matthew Passion” by J.S. Bach and the dramatic “Inflammatus et accensus” from “Stabat Mater” by Gioachino Rossini. Lee Dengler will conclude the first half of the program with three settings of Thomas Hardy poetry by Gerald Finzi: the sturdy “For Life I Have Never Cared Greatly,” the poignant “Lizbie Brown” and the rollicking “Rollicum Rorum.”
Susan Dengler will open the second half of the recital with three art songs of differing musical periods, languages and composers, but all relating to the theme of roses. She will begin with Henry Purcell’s “Sweeter than Roses.” “Les Roses d’Ispahan” by Gabriel Fauré and “La Volubile” of Nicola de Giosa will follow. Lee Dengler will again take the stage to sing three selections from Franz Schubert’s song cycle, “Die Schöne Müllerin,” “Wohin?” “Der Neugierige” and “Mein.” The couple will close the concert as the characters Ben and Lucy in a scene from Gian Carlo Menotti’s comical love story “The Telephone.”
Lee Dengler received a bachelor of music and a master of music in vocal performance from West Chester University School of Music. As assistant professor of music at Goshen College, he teaches voice and composition. He has sung in numerous oratorio and operatic productions and is presently singing with Saint Joseph Valley Camerata. He also directs the Goshen Community Chorale. Lee is a composer and has nearly 200 choral, vocal and piano works published by major music publishers. He also serves as creative consultant and editor for Shawnee Press, a leading choral publisher in the United States.
Susan Dengler has served as assistant professor of music at Goshen College since 1996 and teaches vocal methods and pedagogy, class voice and applied voice. Several of her former students are currently pursuing operatic or other singing careers. As a soprano, she performs regularly as recitalist and oratorio soloist. She has performed soprano roles in many opera productions, including “Cosi fan tutte,” “Gianni Schicchi” and “Don Giovanni.” Susan earned a bachelor in music education degree with advanced standing in vocal performance from West Chester University, where she also did extensive post graduate work in vocal performance. Her master of music degree in church music with a vocal/choral emphasis is from Valparaiso University. She has also served as guest conductor and clinician for children’s choir festivals throughout the East Coast and Midwest. She is submissions editor for Shawnee Press, a nationally known publisher of choral music, and many of her compositions, arrangements and lyrics appear in their catalogue. Susan also serves as the director for the 40-voice Children’s Choir of Michiana, based in South Bend, Ind.
Tickets are $6 for adults, $4 for seniors and students. GC students receive free admission with ID. Tickets can be purchased at the door.
