WGCS nets 19 nominations for Intercollegiate Broadcasting System awards

Goshen College’s 91.1 The Globe (WGCS) has been nominated for Best College Radio Station in the Nation for the 12th consecutive year by the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS). Overall, Goshen College students received 19 nominations for the IBS Student Media Awards, which honor the best college radio and television programs in the country. Winners will be announced on March 5, 2022 as part of the 82nd annual conference, held virtually again this year.

“These nominations are a huge accomplishment to each of us individually and as The Globe community,” said Gabriella Klopfenstein, Globe student station manager. “I am proud of my peers and how much they have grown through this experience and I can’t wait to see what is next.”

Thirteen individual students are included in the nominations, with Dante Stanton, a sophomore broadcasting major from Elkhart, Indiana, leading the way with seven nominations, and Amelia Turnbull, a sophomore broadcasting major from Fort Wayne, Indiana, with six. Both are Len Mallioux IBS Student Management Awards nominees.

“When we focus on our abilities and strive for excellence, national finalist nominations will follow. Our students trust the process and it shows. Clever sayings don’t bring success and recognition, hard work and collaboration do,” said Jason Samuel, associate professor of communication and WGCS general manager.

Best Commercial Promotion: Jackson Steinmetz, a junior film major from Bluffton, Ohio.

Best News Report: Courtney Templeton, a junior film major from St. Louis, Missouri, and Jeremiah Sherrill, a senior film major from Goshen.

Best Variety Program: Eric Miller, a senior film major from Cleveland, Ohio; Sarah Lopez Rimerez, a sophomore film major from Elkhart, Indiana; Shianne Harrison, a 2021 graduate; Madison Swartzentruber, a senior film major from Goshen; Jeremiah Sherrill, Courtney Templeton and Jackson Steinmetz.

Best Press Release: Gabriella Klopfenstein, a senior public relations major from Goshen.

Best On-Air Personality: Seth Smith Kauffman, a first-year communication major from Goshen.

Best On-Air Personality: Amelia Turnbull, a second year broadcasting major from Fort Wayne, Indiana

Best Promo Series: Tyson Miller, first-year communication major from Goshen, Amelia Turnbull and Jeremiah Sherrill. 

Best Newcast: Alyssa McDonald, first-year communication major from Salt Lake City, Utah, and Amelia Turnbull.

Best Sports Play-By-Play Broadcast: Dante Stanton, a sophomore broadcasting major from Elkhart, Indiana.

Len Mallioux IBS Student Management Awards Nominees:

Dante Stanton is nominated for Best College Radio Sports Director. This is his first nomination for the award.

Amelia Turnbull is nominated for Best College Radio News Director. This is her first nomination for the award.

Kyle Hufford, associate professor of communication and Globe TV executive producer, is nominated for Best College TV Faculty Advisor. This is his second nomination for the award. He was also a finalist in 2019.
