College faculty recital features Graulty on clarinet, Jan. 13

Concert: Goshen College Faculty Showcase Recital featuring John Graulty, clarinet, and friends

GOSHEN, Ind. – Goshen College Music Department Chair and Associate Professor of Music John Graulty will present the first Faculty Showcase Recital of 2007 on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the Goshen College Music Center’s Rieth Recital Hall. Graulty, a clarinetist, will perform chamber music with fellow music department faculty and students.

The program will be highlighted by a performance of one of Johannes Brahms’ signature compositions for clarinet, the Clarinet Quintet in B minor Op. 115. Joining Graulty are assistant professor of music Solomia Soroka and GC senior Molly Buckwalter, violin; Community School of the Arts Suzuki String Director Rosalyn Troiano, viola; and instructor of music David Machavariani, cello.

Graulty is professor of clarinet and music director of the Goshen College Orchestra and Honors Wind Symphony. He holds degrees in clarinet performance from the Peabody and New England Conservatories where he studied respectively with Ignatius Gennusa and Harold Wright, former principal clarinetist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. His doctoral degree in higher education is from Columbia University-Teachers College where he studied clarinet with Kalmen Opperman. His clarinet performances have been heard on National Public Radio and WTBU television in Indianapolis, at music festivals in Spoleto, Italy, at the 1984 International Clarinet Competition in London (where he was the only American finalist), at the International Clarinet Association’s “ClarinetFest 2001” in New Orleans and at the Indiana Music Educators Association Annual Conference in Indianapolis in January 2005. He has taught master classes in clarinet at the Latvian Music Academy in Riga, as a guest of the Ministry of Education in the Republic of Singapore, and at the Tanglewood Institute’s “Clarinet Workshop 2005.” He hosted and directed “Clarinet Summit 2004” at Goshen College, featuring master teacher Kalmen Opperman and Emmy and Grammy Award-winning clarinet virtuoso Richard Stoltzman.

Tickets for the recital are $6 for adults, $4 for seniors and students. GC students receive free admission with ID. Tickets are available for purchase at the door.
