Student winners featured in 53rd Annual Goshen College Concerto-Aria Concert Feb. 9

Concert: 53rd Annual Concerto-Aria Concert

Location: Sauder Concert Hall, Goshen College Music Center
Cost: $7 adults, $5 seniors/students, available at the door one hour before the concert. Goshen College faculty/staff/students are free with ID.

Eight student winners of the 2012-2013 Goshen College Concerto-Aria Competition will perform arias and individual concerto movements with the Goshen College Symphony Orchestra, directed by Assistant Professor of Music Christopher Fashun, in the 53nd annual Concerto-Aria Concert on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the Music Center’s Sauder Concert Hall.

Performing:

• Senior Josh Yoder, violin, and senior Chelsea Wimmer, viola, performing W.A. Mozart’s “Sinfonia Concertante for Violin and Viola, K. 364.” Yoder, the son of Erik and Leanne Yoder, is an environmental science and biology double major from Tucson, Ariz. Wimmer, the daughter of Dean and Julia Wimmer, is a music major from Telford, Pa.
• Junior Hillary Harder, violin, performing Jean Sibelius’ “Concerto in D minor, Op. 47.” Harder, the daughter of Tom and Lois Harder, is a music and Spanish double major from Wichita, Kan.
• Junior Stephen Graber, tenor saxophone, performing Heitor Villa Lobos’ “Fantasia for Saxophone and Orchestra.” Graber, son of Millard and Sheila Graber, is a molecular biology/biochemistry major from Goshen.
• Senior Sophie Lapp, piano, performing W.A. Mozart’s “Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor, K. 466.” Lapp, daughter of John and Sandra Shenk Lapp, is a Bible and religion major from Goshen.
• Senior Rachel Mast, mezzo soprano, performing “Una voce poco fa” from Giaochino Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia. Mast, daughter of Fred and Linda Mast, is a music major from Corvallis, Ore.
• Senior Madeline Ruth, piano, performing Maurice Ravel’s “Piano Concerto in G Major.” Ruth, daughter of Philip and Elizabeth Ruth, is a psychology and music double major from Harleysville, Pa.
• Senior Emily Grimes, soprano, performing “Quando me’n vo soletta” from Giacomo Puccini’s La Boheme. Grimes, daughter of Daniel and Brenda Grimes, is a music major from Goshen.

The Goshen College Symphony Orchestra will also perform Giuseppe Verdi’s “Overture from Nabucco.”

Dr. Christopher Fashun is an assistant professor of music at Goshen College where he conducts the Symphony Orchestra, directs the Lavender Jazz Ensemble, oversees the music education program, conducts the orchestras for musicals and opera, and teaches applied percussion. In 2011, he became the music director of the Elkhart County Honors Youth Orchestra, where he has the opportunity to work with talented high school musicians throughout Elkhart County. Fashun holds a bachelor’s degree in music education from Saint Olaf College in Northfield (Minn.) and received a master’s degree in percussion performance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in Orchestral Conducting from the University of Iowa where he studied conducting with William LaRue Jones and viola with Christine Rutledge.
