Rose Kreider '88
Upper Marlboro, Md.
Majors at GC: English, secondary education
Postgraduate education: Masters degree and doctorate
in sociology, University of Maryland
After one year teaching English following graduation, Kreider spent
five years as an information services coordinator for Samaritan
Inns Inc., in Washington, D.C. She then returned to school, eventually
earning a masters degree and doctorate in sociology at the
University of Maryland.
One of the less visible aspects of a GC education is the lasting
relationships you build with faculty which continue to affect career
and other life choices long after graduation, Kreider said.
When I decided to go to graduate school, I talked with several
profs who helped me focus my thinking about which field I wanted
to study. SST also shaped my vocational choices because it made
me more aware of inequalities.
After a year researching with Matrix Research Institute, Philadelphia,
Pa., Kreider is now a statistician demographer at the Fertility
and Family Statistics Branch in the Population Division of the U.S.
Census Bureau.
Im one of the perhaps many students who does not end
up in the specific field for which I trained, but I was always glad
I chose to major in English.
