While I was working on a book about Mennonite women’s organizations, I wanted to experience diverse and vibrant Mennonite women’s activities firsthand. I met interesting people and heard important stories at women’s gatherings across the country. But it was a trip to south Florida in November 2015 that provided an especially unique and inspiring glimpse of what Mennonite women are up to today.
A community won’t get rid of poverty overnight, according to Ruby Payne. But if it works at the issue well for 15 or 20 years, it can make a difference.
“I congratulate Becky on this well-deserved appointment,” said Cornell Provost Michael Kotlikoff. “Goshen College could not have found a more outstanding leader, and the fact that she is an alumna makes this appointment even more special. As a member of our faculty and as vice provost, Becky has had an enormous impact on our research and on student and engagement programs. She has left an indelible imprint on this institution, and her vision and experiences will serve Goshen well.”
Ken Nafziger '63 stepped to the front of the crowded room and, as he has for countless times over the last 40 years, asked his Eastern Mennonite University (EMU) colleagues to sing. This time, it was “Amazing Grace,” the first two stanzas together and then the first stanza in rounds.
Armed with a great idea, an entrepreneurial spirit and a liberal arts education, our young alumni are finding ways to make a living doing what they love. Some studied business or earned one of GC’s entrepreneurship grants right out of college. Others crowdsourced startup capital or started small and grew their business. But no matter how these creative professionals got started or what they studied, they all have a few things in common — strong critical thinking skills, a global perspective, a desire to serve and real-world experience based in a Goshen College education.
Evelyn Kreider was my grandmother. When she died earlier this month, she was 102 years old. She was a remarkable woman, a devoted listener to WVPE and possibly the most passionate critic, for good and ill, of my work on Michiana Chronicles. She will be missed.
