Goshen College's Institute for Latino Educational Achievement, in collaboration with the University of Notre Dame's Institute for Latino Studies, published a three-volume series of research reports, titled "Latinos in Northern Indiana," during the spring of 2011. The reports assess the educational experiences of local Latinos and provide recommendations for improvement.
Five faculty members are saying farewell to Goshen College at the end of the 2010-2011 school year as they retire and begin the next chapters in their lives. The five retirees are John Blosser, professor of art; Rafael Falcón, professor of Spanish; Mervin Helmuth, associate professor of nursing; David Miller, associate professor of biology; and David Janzen, director of human resources and affirmative action officer. Together, they have served a total of 119.5 years at Goshen College.
As a biology and environmental science professor, Ryan Sensenig knows that his students need to learn more than how to use a microscope or all of the scientific names of the plants they are studying.
On Oct. 2, 2006, the world was stunned by the killings of five Amish schoolgirls in a small schoolhouse in Nickel Mines, Pa. Within hours, the Amish community forgave the gunman and rallied around his family. It was an act of compassion and forgiveness so powerful, so unbelievable, and for many, so questionable that it led three authors who know the Amish well to write a book about the role of forgiveness in Amish culture, "Amish Grace: How Forgiveness Transcended Tragedy."
Goshen College will open the 2010-2011 academic year later this month with many new faces-- and not just among new and transfer students. The college also will be welcoming new employees, some of whom were hired and began their duties earlier in the year.
James E. Brenneman has been reappointed to a second term as president of Goshen College by the college's Board of Directors at its February meeting a decision recently approved by the Mennonite Education Agency (MEA) Board of Directors.
Abilene Christian University Press recently published a new book by retired Goshen College Professor of Physics Al Meyer, who was an executive of Mennonite Board of Education for 28 years. The book is titled "Realizing Our Intentions: A Guide for Churches and Colleges with Distinctive Missions."
Two Goshen College faculty members united in their commitment to pacifism, the teachings of the Mennonite church and extending Christian hospitality to others presented conflicting opinions on playing the national anthem before sports events at the college.
Goshen College President Jim Brenneman named Jim Caskey as the new vice president for institutional advancement, a key position on the President’s Council. Caskey started working at Goshen College in 1997 in the Development Office, and most recently served as interim vice president for several months. He will begin in this new role on Jan. 1, 2010.
As the 2009-2010 academic year gets underway, Goshen College is without five long-serving, respected professors. Associate Professor of Nursing Fern Brunner, Professor of Physics Carl Helrich, Professor of Psychology Vic Koop, Professor of Mathematics Ron Milne and Associate Professor of Art Judy Wenig-Horswell retired at the end of last school year. Together, they dedicated 138 years of service to the college and its students.
