As students, faculty, staff, community and church leaders, benefactors and alumni filled Sauder Concert Hall on the morning of Sept. 20 to say thank you and farewell to President Shirley H. Showalter for her service to Goshen College, many wore scarves in all shapes and colors to honor a leader whose trademark accessory connects to her passion for relationships and cross-cultural learning.
Goshen College and the community will celebrate Shirley H. Showalter's service as president during a special convocation at 10 a.m. Sept. 20 in Sauder Concert Hall of the Music Center. This event will cap Showalter's nearly eight years in office.
When Goshen College's Class of 2008 arrived on campus for Orientation Weekend, Aug. 21-22, students and their parents came from Akron, Ind., and Akron, Pa.; from Aurora, Colo., and Aurora, Ore.; Bloomington, Ill., and Bloomington, Ind.; and Millersburg, Ohio and Millersburg, Ind. They also came from as near as three blocks away and as far as Vietnam.
The first day of classes at Goshen College for 2004-05 academic year on Aug. 25 opened with President Shirley H. Showalter's welcoming address to campus. Titled "The Meaning of Life," she called students to develop a meaningful personal philosophy.

Chair of Goshen College's Board of Directors Virgil Miller announced today to college faculty, staff and students that President Shirley H. Showalter is resigning her position in order to join the Fetzer Institute of Kalamazoo, Mich.
From the spontaneous and toe-tapping melodies of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and Wynton Marsalis to the graceful classical performances of the Wroclaw Philharmonic, the 2004 -2005 Goshen College Performing Arts Series will once again bring performers from all over the world and a wide variety of music genres to Michiana audiences.
When listeners tune in to WGCS 91.1 FM on June 21, they will no longer hear the melodies of Mozart -- unless banjo virtuoso Bela Fleck arranges the tunes. General Manager Jason Samuel announced that the Goshen College radio station, 91.1 FM, will now be called "The Globe" and will feature full playlists of Americana and world music -- including the addition of public radio's most popular music program, "World Cafe," which isn't heard on any other station in the region.
Bulldozers have begun to move dirt, but the hammers haven¬t started pounding yet. Construction of a new four-story apartment-style building on the Goshen College campus, to house seniors in 16 apartments, began the first week of June with the intention of being completed by the fall of 2005.
