Four Goshen College students on spring break didn't wake up anywhere near a beach Thursday morning, Feb. 27. They woke up with plans to go build a house, and a subzero wind chill wasn't going to stop them.
“As a Latino population we are to the point where we are no longer here to be served. We’re here to serve, we’re here to lead.” That’s the message Gilberto Perez has when he talks about the future of the Latino community in Goshen. Whether through his organization, Bienvenido Community Solutions, which helps those new to the U.S. integrate into the community, as an associate professor of social work at Goshen College or in his role on Goshen’s Plan Commission, Gilberto Perez has made his mark.
Some students at Goshen College are volunteering their spring break to help build a new home for a family in need.

“Wheeled Vehicle” was only one of nearly 40 science-related events staged at various GC locations Saturday. The others included “Bungee Drop,” “Chemistry Lab,” “Elastic Launched Glider,” “Helicopters,” “Rotor Egg Drop” and “Shock Value."
Five Core Media, a video production firm in Goshen, Ind., has produced an American Sign Language version of Who Are the Mennonites?, a DVD/video produced by a predecessor agency of MennoMedia and sent to Mennonite Church USA congregations in 2010.
Students and staff at Goshen College helped ring in Monday’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a healthy lineup of events and gatherings geared toward celebrating the life and message of the renowned Civil Rights activist and leader.
Lee Roy Berry, Jr., taught political science at Goshen College from 1969 until 2010. He was the first black faculty member hired by Goshen College. During his time teaching, he earned his Juris Doctor and currently practices law in Goshen. Below, Berry shares his memories and knowledge of the civil rights movement, as well as commentary on the importance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., his work and those he worked alongside.
