How does a small, historically Mennonite college in Northern Indiana find itself on the brink of becoming a Hispanic Serving Institution in 2022, when only four percent of undergraduate students identified as Latinx just 15 years ago? Goshen College’s journey toward becoming a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) is really three interconnected stories.
College got a bit easier and more enjoyable this past academic year for some students at Goshen College, thanks to an innovative peer mentoring program by the Center for Intercultural and International Education (CIIE).
In 2014, Gilberto Perez Jr. took on a new role in the college’s Center for Intercultural and International Education after two years as an associate professor of social work. He comes to this campus leadership role with a passion for bringing diverse people together and increasing trust and relationships between local law enforcement officials, neighborhood associations, Goshen College and the Latino community.
At the age of 12, Edgar Saucedo-Davila ’11 hated school. Today, he is the first person to graduate from both a Center for Intercultural Teaching and Learning undergraduate cohort and the Master of Arts in Intercultural Leadership program at Goshen College.
Goshen College celebrated its intercultural teaching and learning community and its growing relationship and friendship with the Mexican government at a campus reception and celebratory dinner Thursday, May 7, 2015.
In a new effort by Goshen College’s Center for Intercultural and International Education (CIIE), the college has begun offering English language classes for community members.
Goshen College students, faculty and community members will focus on the life of Martin Luther King Jr. and explore the theme “Be Brave, Show Grace: Advancing Intercultural Action” during the MLK Day celebration events on Jan. 18 and 19.
The Mexican Consulate in Indianapolis and Goshen College will together award $40,000 in scholarship aid to GC students of Mexican heritage during the 2014-15 school year.
