Week 9, March 12-17: Arequipa service assignments
Olivia lives with Nancy and Julio and their pet Aria.On her first weekend in Arequipa, she joined the clowns at a church event for youth.
Olivia spends her mornings assisting the English teacher at John Wesley School.
She volunteers in the afternoon at an after-school welcome center for marginalized children.
Desiree shares a home with hosts Dolly and Juan Carlos, their two children, and another family of six who are temporarily sheltered there.
She assists with Dolly’s event planning business, constructing this pinata and creating fruit sculptures.
In the mornings, Desiree volunteers at the Francisco Rojas bilingual Christian school where her host siblings study.
SST leaders Pat and Sylvia enjoyed visiting Arequipa with Lima coordinator Celia, and reconnecting with Olivia and Desiree. During the visits to service placements, Olivia and Desiree’s supervisors expressed appreciation for the dedication of the SST volunteers and for the example of voluntary service that they provide for children.
