First week of classes
Our first week of study is well underway. Classes and lectures take place at Catedral Buen Pastor, an Anglican church in the district of Miraflores. In the mornings, students have lectures on various cultural, social, and historical topics. This week featured lectures on Peruvian history, life in marginalized sectors of Lima, as well as a chance to meet Willy Villavicencio, our service coordinator, who shared about the life and customs of highland communities.
In the afternoon, students are divided up into smaller groups and have several hours of language instruction. This term, half of the students are studying Spanish, while the other half are studying Peruvian Sign Language.
In addition to their studies in the classroom, students have also been introduced to the fine art of public transportation and have been tackling this new subject with great aplomb. By the end of the week, students will be navigating public transportation to and from classes on their own!
