Professor Jan Shetler and students from the History of Ethnic Conflict class will lead this convocation, on the day that commemorates 20 years since horrific genocide began in Rwanda. How are the wounds of violence healed? How can rival ethnic and religious groups learn to live together in peace?

Three GC seniors will reflect on their years as a Goshen College student through the lens of faith.

Beryl Jantzi is stewardship educator for Everence Financial, an organization that helps people connect faith and finances. He will also visit Economics and Personal Finance classes on Tuesday.

On this, the first day of the Religion and Science Conference at GC, President James Brenneman will preach on the compatibility of science and religion.

Small business and entrepreneurs are the untapped engine to solving problems of poverty. Loren Hostetter, Director of New Business Development for MEDA (Mennonite Economic Development Association), will share stories of MEDA’s innovative work in agricultural value chains and agri-business development in South America, Eastern Europe, and Africa. Loren received a Masters Degree in International Development from American University.

Trevor Bechtel is a religion professor at Bluffton University, in Ohio, and the recipient of the 2013-14 C. Henry Smith Peace Lectureship.Working from specific stories of animals across domestic and wild spaces, Dr. Bechtel argues that peace is found wherever we discover right relationships. His work aims at understanding the ecology of our relationships and seeking the full flourishing of all life. Surprising answers to questions of domestication, vegetarianism, hunting and pet owning will be considered.

Members of the Goshen College Black Student Union will present this convocation, which includes personal stories, introductions to influential African-Americans of the past and present, and African-American song and dance. Presenters are Dominic Arrowwood-Fouce, Tyra Carver, Trevor Emery, Jerron Jamerson, Jesse Loewen, Nathan Orr, Malcolm Stovall, and Antianna Terrell. Faculty sponsor is DaVonne Harris.
