Chapel: “The Promise of the Holy Spirit”–meditation by Campus Pastor Bob Yoder
Come on out to the first chapel of a new semester at 10:00 a.m. in the Church-Chapel! This chapel begins the first of a two-part focus on the Holy Spirit. Bob Yoder, campus pastor, will share a meditation regarding some of the “basics” of the Holy Spirit by sharing some personal stories and reflecting on a few scripture passages. Next week we will sing songs about the Spirit.

Convocation: “Christians Meeting Muslims” – James Krabill
Stories of encounters between Muslims and Mennonites, Brethren and other related Christian groups around the world. Speaker James Krabill was a missionary in West Africa for 14 years and currently serves as senior executive for global ministries at Mennonite Mission Network, based in Elkhart, Indiana. He co-edited a book published in 2005 titled Anabaptists Meeting Muslims.
Chapel: “Claiming God’s Hope on Campus” – sermon by student Lane Miller
The campus ministries theme for the 2008-09 school year is “Sensing God’s Hope, Claiming God’s Hope.”

How does an election year affect the Goshen College community? Five faculty members will discuss these questions and more: How does the media influence our views? What role is racism playing in this election? Are politics in the US really as divisive as it seems? How will the next president affect energy and environmental policy? How should folks at a liberal arts college talk about politics? What are appropriate ways for Christians to relate to politics? What will happen at GC the morning after the election, on Nov. 5? Speakers will be Rachel Lapp, Lisa Guedea Carreao, Joe Liechty, Dave Ostergren, Ross Peterson-Veatch, and moderator Duane Stoltzfus.

Two alumni will tell their faith stories:Dale Kempf, class of 1978, Distinguished Fellow at Abbott Labs and one of three 2008 recipients of the Culture for Service awardJanna Hunter-Bowman, class of 2000, peace worker in Colombia and recipient of the Decade of Service award, given to a young alumnus who has graduated within the last 10 years.A reception for all of the 2008 alumni award recipients will be held in the Gathering Rooms of the Church-Chapel immediately after the chapel service.
