Chapel: “Adjusting the Lens of Salvation: Biblical Jesus and shalom” – Michele Hershberger
By exploring Luke 8:40ff and the reality that the woman who touched Jesus’ edge of his cloak fully believed that he was the Messiah, Michele will explain the prayer shawl fringe and explore a salvation that is not just pie in the sky nor just doing justice in the world and working for peace. Because she believes that he can not only save her soul or only heal her body but the whole package: social, physical, spiritual, etc.
Special Chapel: “Changing the Angle on Jesus: A personal story” – guest speaker Michele Hershberger
Michele will help us realize the importance of understanding the biblical Jesus in order to curb the temptation to shape Jesus into our own cultural identity. She will explore the Ceasarea Phillip story in Matthew 16 and share part of her own faith journey. The twist of Matthew 16 is that Jesus believes in Simon and the others, motley crew that they were.
Convocation: Two Latino/a Poets Launch Hispanic Heritage Month
Poets Maurice Guevara and Brenda Cardenas share their poetry and launch Hispanic Heritage Month.
Chapel: “Bedside Baptist, Mattress Mennonite, and Other Local Worship Options”
Speakers will be Phil Vander Ploeg (from Downtown 808) and Morgan Kraybill (GC senior).Chapel will be followed by a cookie reception in Schrock Plaza and a time to mingle with local pastors.
Chapel: “Sensing God’s Hope, Claiming God’s Hope”
Members of Campus Ministries introduces the special theme for 2008-09, centered on “Sensing God’s Hope, Claiming God’s Hope.” Come out for a time of worship, singing, and connecting with the Goshen College community.
Opening Convocation with Pres. Brenneman: “Living the Core”
The annual Opening Convocation will be held in Sauder Hall in the Music Center this year. The entire campus community is warmly invited to this special event to launch the school year.
Chapel: Summer Sendings/Blessings, led by Inquiry Program students
This is our final chapel service of the school year. It will be led by students in the “Preparation for Inquiry Program” class. These students will be spending their summers in various ministry, service, and camp opportunities. They will be blessing us off to our respective summer plans, as well as a farewell to those graduating. Chapel: “A Less-Traveled Road for Christian College Students …” by Brian McLaren, noted author and speaker
Many young adults feel torn between two options: a) preserve the traditional approaches to Christian faith which are available to them, or b) reject any active practice of the faith altogether. There is a third option: c) to explore and discover new ways of living and practicing the way of Jesus. In today’s chapel, Brian McLaren will explore the strengths and weaknesses of all three options, and encourage students who feel so called to choose the third less-traveled road. Noted author and speaker Brian McLaren returns to Goshen College campus with his “Everything Must Change” tour. In this chapel service, he will give an overview of key themes to the upcoming 24-hour event held Friday evening through Saturday evening.

Three seniors will answer the question: “How has your perception of yourself changed during your college years?” Speakers will be Luis Robledo, Messay Tamrat, and Laura Leischner.

Come on out for our final chapel of the second semester! This chapel service will be a hymn sing based on student favorites. You’ll have opportunity to email your vote to the leaders, who will then create a worship service centered around the top selected hymns.

Contemporary Job or just another Joe? In this chapel John Blosser, professor of art, will offer personal reflections on his recent strolls through the Valley of the Shadow of Death (recent encounters with Lymphoma, a second coronary and multiple losses of loved ones) and how these experiences may have tempered his faith.
