3-hour introduction and application of one way to incorporate deliberate practice into an interpreter’s or student’s self-improvement plan. A step-by-step process of pre-production, production, analysis and post-production work is explained, demonstrated then put into “hands-up” or “voices-on” practice. This workshop is for anyone who needs a process of analysis to improve their work.

Feedback: The Craft of Mentors

The communications theory, Leader-MemberExchange (LMX), is the theoretical basis of this
workshop. A strong focus is placed on relationship building and the development of communication strategies within the mentoring partnership. Participants learn a cycle of practice to use while creating a plan of action for professional growth and skill development. Perspectives regarding routines and beliefs of the formal mentoring relationship, the feedback process, and deliberate practice will be discussed.

*There will be a one-hour break for lunch which will be on your own.

Presenter Bio:

Jamie Hunerjager

Jamie Hunerjager is a nationally certified American Sign Language interpreter with 30 years of professional interpreting and teaching experience. She holds RID CI/CT, Specialist Certificate: Legal (SC:L), BEI-Master, and EIPA-Secondary certifications. Jamie interprets in various settings and presents workshops about such topics as interpreter certification and testing, best practices for working with Deaf and hard of hearing students, self-assessment techniques, mentoring and legal interpreting. She has presented to organizations such as the National Association of Interpretive Naturalists regarding ways to accommodate county parks programs for Deaf and hard of hearing visitors and the National Consortium of Interpreter Education Centers (NCIEC) regarding power and privilege in the language choices of interpreters. Jamie graduated from Western Michigan University (WMU) with a BA in Sociology with an emphasis in Social Psychology, and a minor in Criminal Justice. She began graduate studies at the University of Northern Colorado where she participated in the Legal Interpreter Training Program (LITP), which culminated in a masters of arts in Communications from WMU in 2017. Currently Jamie teaches ASL at Kalamazoo Valley Community College and WMU. While she loves interpreting and teaching, she can’t resist the call of the great outdoors to enjoy kayaking, hiking and camping. If you can’t reach her, she’s off the grid!

Tanya Timmerman

Tanya Timmerman is a graduate of Grand Valley State University with a Bachelor’s in Health Professions and a minor in Psychology. She is a full-time ASL instructor at Western Michigan University (WMU) and adjunct instructor at Kalamazoo Valley Community College (KVCC). Currently, Tanya works as the ASL program coordinator and Faculty Specialist for the WMU ASL program as such she fosters relationships between WMU students and the local Deaf community. She serves as a member of the Committee on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. As a biracial Deaf female, Tanya offers a unique, intersectional perspective of Deafness, race, gender, culture and has a candid and often humorous approach to difficult discussions on these topics. Tanya believes in the power of community and self-advocacy. To support this, she is the Community Organization Coordinator for Kalamazoo Area Deaf Night Out, an organization that hosts monthly events/socials for the local Deaf community. Miss Timmerman collaborates with Celebration Cinema to provide Open Captioned movies twice a week all over Michigan, improving access to movies for the community. Additionally, Miss Timmerman shares her expertise by serving as a Language Mentor for the Lansing Chapter of CORE Interpreters. Got an ASL or Deaf culture related question? Hit her up!
