Batik / Tie Dye
We spent an afternoon participating in the process of tie dye and batik. We learned four different techniques that are commonly used – simple tie dye, stitching patterns, using gum arabic, applying wax using block stamping.
Madame Faye welcomed us to her home and courtyard. She and her helpers demonstrated and assisted us with the process. Each student prepared a sample of their choice. After initial preparation they donned gloves and masks to dye the cloth. The pieces were then rinsed, hung to dry, and the waxed pieces were boiled and rinsed again to remove the wax. The end result was a beautiful and varied display of which we were all proud.
