First week
Week
one has included orientation
to life in Ivory Coast, meeting host families, a walking tour of the
neighborhood where classes are held, as well as beginning classes. In
the photo, Mike is shown with his host father Richard.
All
classes are being held at a communication
center in Cocody. We've had lectures so far on the recent history
of the country, family life and the various ethnic groups of the country.
The first field trip was a day long excursion through the various communities that make up greater Abidjan. Thirteen students, Tom, Samuel and Noka boarded a gbaka in the morning and toured the city. The noon meal was at a Lebanese restaurant in Treichville with the traditional sandwich, a chawarma, as the main course. The day ended with a delightful meal at the home of Dorothy and Steve Wiebe-Johnson who are finishing a term as Mennonite missionaries in Ivory Coast.
