SOUTH BEND, IN. – “Energetic.” That is the answer that Angelo Di Carlo gave to the Goshen College Write on Sports camp when they questioned him about one word that describes himself. On July 9, 2014, the Write on Sports camp visited the WNDU studios and interviewed the spontaneous and energetic sports caster.
Mr.Di Carlo is very enthusiastic, excited, and prepared for his job. As the sports caster he always has a four minute plan for the three minute sports segment just as a back up, because sometimes he’ll plan to talk about a game that finishes right before he goes on the air but then it goes into overtime. So he throws that plan out the window and talks about something else. For example, there was a no-hitter right before they went on the air and he was working behind the scenes, so he had to run the tape around from producer to editor and to the cameras and so forth so that it could make it on the show in time. He was running around from place to place to get the video on the air. “People looked at me like I’m insane but I am.” But he was able to get it on the air in time.
He really enjoys going to work, and not for the money. He said that his job doesn’t pay much. “If you’re doing this for the money, be a lawyer.” He has crazy work hours, too. He doesn’t have hardly any weekends off of work because he always goes to all of the Notre Dame home football games on Saturdays. This means that he hardly ever gets to see his family in Pennsylvania unless he takes a vacation. He has sacrificed that so he can be on WNDU. Speaking of family, he has a younger brother who is also a sports caster. As with lots of siblings, there is normally some friendly competition. Well, not for the Di Carlo brothers, who “don’t necessarily compete as much as we give feedback to each other” and “send clips to each other all the time and also look at each other’s websites.”
Mr. Di Carlo has had more chaotic moments in his career as well. He mentions the “crazy post-game shows” and how sometimes he the news team “stretches time.” He says that “It’s crazy sometimes but that’s what makes it fun.”
