“Energetic, maybe?” This is Angelo DiCarlo’s response when asked to describe himself in one word.
DiCarlo has been a sportscaster at WNDU in South Bend, Indiana, for seven years now. Every Saturday evening at 6:20, DiCarlo prepares himself for showtime and then catches up with the latest news on his iPhone until approximately 6:22, which is when the music starts and the cameras roll.
DiCarlo works very hard in his job, but he still has a fun time doing what he loves. He works every day, Monday through Saturday. Some weeks, he is at work for about 75 hours! DiCarlo is very dedicated to what he does. He’s always on his phone, checking to see if there’s any last minute news that he may be unaware of. Mike Hoffman, the chief meteorologist at WNDU, describes DiCarlo as “the hardest working, best sportscaster I’ve ever worked with.” He must work very hard to earn that title from his colleagues.
Though Angelo DiCarlo works very hard every day, he always finds a way to have fun while working. When Write on Sports came to WNDU to interview him, he got out his iPhone and took a selfie with all of us in the background, and then he tweeted it on his personal Twitter account. In addition, most people don’t know that DiCarlo wears shorts underneath the table when he’s broadcasting the news.
Hoffman also told Write on Sports that “the craziness of him (DiCarlo) comes out in his sportscasts.”
When asked about his job, DiCarlo says, “It’s fun. You get to do a lot of cool things.” For example, DiCarlo gets to travel with some basketball teams when they go to tournaments and other competitions.
So what makes DiCarlo’s job so fun for him? “It’s the adrenaline rush,” he says.
The life of a sportscaster is crazy and hectic, but Angelo DiCarlo manages to balance it all with the right mix of hard work and good times!
