July 8th, 2015 at the Joyce Center in Notre Dame, Write On Sports interviewed Bonzie Colsen from the Men’s Notre Dame basketball team. He was born in Washington, D.C. and grew up in Bethlehem, Massachusetts. His dad coached Boston College basketball and then his dad got fired from Boston College. As a kid Bonzie grew up playing baseball and Pop Warner football, but his mom didn’t want Bonzie playing Pop Warner football because he was the tallest guy out there and he would get hit at the knees and his mom didn’t want him getting hurt.
So he stopped playing football and started focusing on basketball. Bonzie’s favorite basketball player growing up was Shaquille O’Neal or Shaq for short. Shaq wasn’t the only one who inspired him, his dad also played a big role “(he) helped me develop my game throughout my whole life” said Bonzie.
Bonzie practices with the team for 1 hour and 15 minutes, so he did that every day during basketball season. So he didn’t have a lot of free time but when he did he would shoot hoops in the gym and hang out with friends and go out to dinner with them, they would play putt putt and every once in a while do paintball. He still has 2 years of college and I think he can break some records.
