On July 13, 2016 Write On Sports interviewed Jason Samuel, the general manager of 91.1 “The Globe.”
Jason Samuel took over the position 13 years ago. Jason Samuel made it to where the station was mostly all run by students of Goshen College, and since then it has grown tremendously. The audience was small, since then more students have been running the station, leading to more awards being won. Write On Sports was lucky enough to be able to visit the station, and when we entered the main room, it was alined with trophies. Only one of which was Mr. Samuel’s. Samuel has many many trophies, but likes to show off the students more than himself. When asked what is the best part of being general manager he responded with, “Watching the students improve.”
Since Jason Samuel’s arrival, they have been covering college basketball, baseball, soccer, and more. When asked what the station would be like without the students he answered with, “It would be impossible, it would be boring.” Mr Samuel is an astonishing person to interview, since he puts all of his students before himself, and never boasts. The station plays what is called “an eclectic mix” which is a variety of music such as alternative acoustic, folk, singer-songwriter and world beat artists.
Jason Samuel has many great things to say, about his students, and how they make the station possible. He said that we are like legos, “with one or two legos, you can’t do much, but with 100 legos, you can do anything.” The radio station was named “the best college radio station in the Nation” three times in recent years.
