“I had been speaking since I had came out of the womb,” Vince Turner said. Turner had grown up in Southern California, listening to the Dodgers and the Angel’s on his tiny radio. In 1977, Turner had started sportswriting for the Elkhart Truth. From then on, Turner knew he had some Vin Scully in him, so he started his sports broadcasting career in 1985. He handled play-by-play for high school basketball teams, football, and Notre Dame basketball. After 13 years of being a sports director, he worked for 10 years at Bashor Children’s Home. When he was done serving his ten years to Bashor Children’s Home, he had joined Mutual Bank and he is now currently vice president of the Mutual Bank.
Even though Turner had taken a bumpy ride during his childhood, he had still dedicated most of his life to Bashor. “It was a chance to make my faith alive,” Turner said. Part of his earlier years were mainly dedicated to writing, and reporting sports. One of his favorite games was an Indiana state final basketball between Concord and Bedford, with the largest audience Turner had ever broadcasted in front of. “Of all the tapes from all my years of sportscasting, it’s the only tape I still pull out and listen to,” Turner said.
Turner, though, only had one favorite fan; his grandfather. “My grandfather was always my biggest fan,” Turner said. His grandfather had read every paper Turner had written from school, and every big opportunity Turner had transpired, his grandfather was always there to motivate him.
That motivation had really payed off. Turner’s success had expanded. Turner was named Indiana sportscaster of the year, and had earned 22 Associated Press and United Press International broadcast honors.
