Simon Miller- a 2018 graduate of Bethany Christian High School in Goshen- started high jump less than three months ago, but his jump(6′ 7″) is only one inch below the current Goshen College record. This year he will be competing for Goshen College, which gives Miller–who finished 5th in the entire state of Indiana in high jumping–a good chance of breaking this record. Miller says that he is excited to be coached by Goshen’s current record holder, Kyle Mishler. Both high jumpers were interviewed by Write on Sports on July 10th at Goshen College.
Mishler says that he thinks Miller could learn to jump at least four inches higher, which would set a new school record. It may seem like Mishler would be hoping to keep his record, but he says that he is satisfied to coach his way into the record book. He certainly is an experienced coach, coaching Sam Grewe to silver at the Paralympic Games in Rio. Grewe has also won gold at the 2015 IPC World Championships. This means that Mishler definitely has the skill to help Miller achieve his goal of having a 7′ jump someday. If he is able to achieve this goal, Miller would become one of the best high jumpers in Indiana, and qualify to compete at the national level.
