On July 17, 2018, Write on Sports interviewed Chelsea Foster, a native of the Indianapolis area. Growing up, Foster played softball, though not very well. In her junior year of High School, Foster quit softball to join track, an activity her friends were doing. Foster’s track coach encouraged her to run cross country. After some pressuring and persuading, Foster agreed. Looking for colleges, she found Goshen College by looking through her spam email. Now, Foster is running on the Goshen College cross country and track teams.
Foster, on average, runs an average of 4-5 miles each day, with a top length of 10.5 miles at one time. She has a top mile time of 5:30. Can you do that? Despite all that practice, the meets Foster competes in are still challenging. She is a competitive person and likes pressure, so thinking things such as “I can win and my teammates are relying on me” helps Foster go faster. A quote that she runs by is, “Just try your best,” and inspirational people for Foster are her teammates, coaches, and Victor Oladipo. Has Foster ever wanted to give up? In fact, she has. Problems finding money for college and a shin splint, an instance where your muscles tear away from you shin bones, have made Foster question her running career.
What about Foster’s plans for her future? She does want to open a bakery in her retirement. Despite the injuries, Foster wants to join a small running club or team after college. As for a career, she doesn’t really know yet. Chelsea Foster, a Goshen College running legend.
