On July 9th, 2019 we interviewed Kyle Hufford at the Library of Goshen College. He is currently the general manager of FiveCore Media and also the assistant professor of communication at Goshen College. Under Kyle’s leadership, FiveCore Media has won over 75 awards. We talked to him about broadcasting on television.
The room where Kyle broadcasts live is a tiny room. There are two corners where all of the broadcasting happens. One corner looks like part of a school hallway and is used for the Globe Sports Corner shows. The other has two comfy sofas and is used for speaking to guests. On one side are the two corners and on the other side are the cameras. The cameras are positioned and turned based on different shows.
While Kyle and his students do not actually broadcast live, they try to broadcast “live to tape” which is trying to only record once. Of course, if there is a big mistake they will do a redo. To do a broadcast without restarting, Kyle’s students have to be careful. They know which camera is recording by looking at a small light on top. if it is red that means it is live. They have to be careful not to knock anything over. Their technique is also important. “When your subject isn’t moving, you need to move to keep the motion going.” Kyle and his students have to know all this to broadcast.
Kyle advertises his shows in many ways. Since they are working in unison with The Globe radio station, he can advertise shows there. Another way to share his shows is by using social media. With more and more people looking online, offline advertising is a thing of the past. Kyle admits “Marketing is primarily online.”
