Goshen,IN- Soccer. Relationships. Academics. These three words sum up what Gaby Romo is all about.
Romo is a star soccer player for IPFW (Indiana Purdue Fort Wayne). On the field, Romo is all about practicing: doing drills, dribbling up and down the field, and shooting into the goal.
But off the field, Romo turns her focus to other, more important subjects. For example, Romo makes sure she has time in her schedule to make it to all of her classes, and to turn in all of her homework on time. Sometimes, she has to do homework on the bus on the way to soccer games. In addition, to stay on the soccer team, you need to keep up at least a 3.5 grade point average. Romo said that she wants to keep it up because she really wants to play. But Romo isn’t ALL about soccer and academics.
“I’m a family oriented person.” Romo said with a smile, when she visited Write on Sports camp on July 14th. For example, when Romo was invited to go to Cincinnati for a soccer tournament that lots of college scouts would be attending, she didn’t want to go alone. So, she brought along her teammate and friend, Janeth Vela.
In addition, Romo knows that it’s important to keep up a strong relationship with your team. “The people that you’re with… It’s just like another family, you know?” Romo said.
Gaby Romo is a very well-rounded player, who understands that academics are top priority, practice makes perfect, and strong relationships help you work together on and off the field.
