Gaby Romo walks toward the ball clearing her mind for the penalty kick to win of the first round of the sectional championship against the Northridge Raiders. Romo, an incoming sophomore at Indiana Purdue Fort Wayne (IPFW) and recent graduate of Goshen High School, is looking to find the balance between soccer and school. Romo is currently working toward her major in biology (pre-medicine) off her full-ride athletic scholarship.
On a daily basis Romo wakes up bright and early in the morning for soccer practice. Then following practice the team has weightlifting. After weightlifting she has all evening classes which can be hard to concentrate after being very active all day. But that’s not all, she’s traveling on weekends for games so thats when Romo gets her studying done, which can be difficult on a loud and moving bus.
“It’s like a job,” says Romo, which at the least might be an understatement, for a pre-med student.
Soccer and school is like a job, except with very little vacation days. The team has workouts and practices during Christmas break, so when other students are out partying with their friends, Romo is putting in the work that will pay off.
