“I’m up to the challenge.” This is what Gaby Romo, an elite female soccer player, said to Write on Sports journalists.
Romo is a soccer player for the Mastodons at Indiana Purdue Forte Wayne. She has loved soccer all her life and it has taken her to great places and given her great opportunities but we all start out somewhere, and Ms. Romo started when she was six years old.
Four brothers and a soccer ball always leads to a good ol’ soccer game. Romo had learned from her brothers how to play soccer, she was the only girl who would play with boys.
“More aggressive and more yelling,” is how Ms. Romo described how she plays soccer now, learning from the boys. She was going to West Goshen Elementary at the time when she found her love for the game.
Currently Ms. Romo still plays soccer at an advanced level. In fact, she hasn’t ever played any other sport. “I stayed loyal to soccer.”
She loves her team and her teammates, “Its another family; you’re not alone,” said Romo.
Some of her influences were her high school coaches who pushed her and introduced her into the more advanced teams. As well as her club coach who taught Romo how to be calm when playing. “Just breathe he told me,” said Ms. Romo. Her role model has always been Christian Ronaldo.
Being a dedicated soccer player is hard but being dedicated to soccer and school is harder but Romo still maintains good grades and the GPA to keep playing her game. “Its in the words student athlete not athlete student.” Even with all that weight on her shoulders Romo still tries out for the Mexico team, now time to wait for the call.
