Notre Dame’s sophomore forward Bonzie Colson has been very superstitious. He has been that way since high school when he went to St. Andrew’s (R.I.).
It all starts the night before, his bed is always next to the door and Zach Auguste sleeps next to the window. Mr. Colson sleeps with three pillows, one on ether side of him and one at his head. The next day Bonzie always listens to the same song, “Dreams and Nightmares,” by Meek Mill. Then Zach will watch crazy youtube videos “of lions ripping off giraffe’s heads and stuff like that, and I will be doing the same thing by myself,” said Bonzie when he was asked about his superstitions. His dad will always text him a prayer before the game. On the floor Bonzie Colson always does a layup, a jumper from the left key, then right before the game he shakes all his teammates hands and always finishes with Austin Torres. Then he sits down and asks Swan (an assistant coach) what socks he is wearing “cause he always has fancy socks,” Bonzie said when asked about why he asks Swan what socks he is wearing. And after all that he is ready to go.
All of this must pay off because he was named Two-time Rhode Island Gatorade Player of the Year (2013 and 2014) in high school. In his senior year of high school he averaged 16.3 points, 11.3 rebounds, and 3.8 blocked shots. And as a freshman at Notre Dame he helped them reach the elite eight of the NCAA tournament and helped them win the ACC tournament. And where has the supertitsion come from? His dad.
