“I was born to the game of basketball,” says Notre Dame basketball player, Bonzie Colson, when students of Write on Sports interviewed him inside the Joyce Center of Notre Dame on July 8, 2015. His father has been playing basketball since Bonzie was a young age. He has been very important to Bonzie’s development of basketball skills. Bonzie’s father, Bonzie Sr., has coached Bonzie’s basketball teams and has ben very influential in Bonzie’s basketball career. Shaquille O’Neal was Bonzie’s favorite basketball player at a young age, partially because he looked like Bonzie Sr.
Bonzie always looked up to his father. “He’s kind of like my mentor,” he says. When Bonzie Sr. got fired from his position as a basketball coach at Boston College, Bonzie developed a thirst for revenge against Boston’s basketball team. Once on the Notre Dame basketball team, Bonzie was able to quench that thirst. His team played against Boston’s and Bonzie got his chance to avenge his father. He played one of his best games, had 100 to 200 fans come to the game to support him, and beat the Boston team. Once again, Bonzie and his father had another victory.
