On July 8th, the Write on Sports camp interviewed Bonzie Colson at the Notre Dame University campus. Bonzie Colson is a sophomore at Notre Dame and is a forward in the men’s basketball team.
Colson’s dad, Bonzie Colson Sr., former coach, taught Colson everything about basketball at a young age. “I was born into the game of basketball,” Colson says. He always wanted to play and went to his dad’s basketball practices and was the water boy for the team. Colson’s dad was his role model and kept him “always involved in basketball.”
Like many children, he had tried many sports like baseball and football although his heart belonged to the game of basketball. In football, Colson got hurt playing and his mother wanted him to stop playing.
If it weren’t for ND, Colson wouldn’t be the player he is today. Although he didn’t know about ND until they recruited him, he immediately fell in love with the visit. He thoroughly enjoyed practicing with the basketball team, the games, the academics, the fun, and the atmosphere in general. “It was a great opportunity” Colson described.
Colson’s strong relationship with his coach is a major part of continuously becoming a better forward. “I love him man. He’s a great person.” He describes his coach as “chill and relaxed” and a person he can always rely on.
Colson plans on improving his jump shots, rebounds, guard positions, and being a leader for the team. With lots of perseverance and determination, Colson will help lead his team to victory.
