Write on Sports camp interviewed Errick McCollum via FaceTime at the Goshen College Newcomer centre. McCollum is a Goshen College alumni with a major in business, and is well known for making 82 points in one basketball game in China.
McCollum’s brother, C.J. , plays basketball for the Portland Trail Blazers. The rest of his family is also very involved in basketball as well as supportive of McCollum. His mother and father are divorced but still support and take care of McCollum and his brother. C.J. is McCollum’s best friend and they are always together when they are around. They push each other to do their best and inspires the other to do better. “When you see your sibling do good things that should motivate you”, says McCollum. The siblings workout together when they are around and always have friendly competitions such as getting the best grade.
As mentioned before, McCollum attended Goshen for College and majored in business. He had received a scholarship from Goshen and chose the school because it was the best fit for him. McCollum worked hard for both academics and basketball. He made sure all of his school work was taken care of and his basketball goals of 1,000 shots a day were met. While other peers were out partying and having fun, McCollum said he would be practicing in the gym or finishing homework. Although it took lots of effort, his work paid off.
Aside from his travels to China, McCollum has played in Greece and Israel. While in China, McCollum made history by scoring 82 points in a single game. “It was a blessing,” McCollum recalls. “I’ve always been someone who loves experiences.” McCollum worked very hard but says it was the glory of God that allowed him to do what he loves.
