Errick McCollum has a special place in his heart for basketball. McCollum said that he was one of the shorter kids in middle school and claimed to be 5 foot 2. Then starting his freshman year in high school he grew to be 5 foot 5. His mother and father – although divorced – were both hard workers and made sure he always got what he needed. When college came around he had a choice of Division 1, 2, or 3. His family couldn’t afford a 30,000 dollar school so Division 1 was off of the list. He found that Goshen College suited him well, so that was his choice.
Errick McCollum played in Europe for leagues such as Greece and Israel. The first time he went overseas he was scared because he didn’t know anyone and didn’t have any friends or family. That changed very quickly because if you meet a kind humble guy like Errick McCollum you will quickly come to like him. McCollum has been with his one and only agent for 6 years straight. He likes to think of his basketball teammates as family and is very grateful to have his translator with him. Errick McCollum is very into routine and after each game will text his girlfriend, his mom, his dad, etc. and tell them how the game went such as “did he lose?” did he win?” “how man points did he score.” McCollum called his family “Basketball junkies” because they would always ask his all sorts of questions about his game and they knew a lot about basketball.
Errick’s brother CJ McCollum is and NBA athlete and was drafted in 2010 by the Portland Trail Blazers. McCollum’s motto is the same for basketball and for life, “You’re never as good as you think you are and it’s never as bad as it seems.” This means if you are in a game and you are doing good but you think you are better than everyone else and if you lose a game it’s not that bad because there is always a next time. Once Errick McCollum retires from basketball he has a backup plan which is marketing because as Goshen he earned a bachelor’s degree in business.
