On July 15, 2016 Write On Sports interviewed Jerron Jamerson at Goshen College.
Ever since Jerron picked up a basketball at age 6 he was hooked. He played many other sports, as he was an athletic child but basketball was his favorite. Jerron’s favorite player when he was a kid was Penny Hartaway. Jerron got a scholarship for playing basketball, because of his talent.
Jerron went to college in Ohio but later transferred to Goshen because he wanted to be closer to home. Jerron was inspired by his parents since he always saw them go to work everyday, he wanted to also work hard. He graduated in 2014, and moved to the Canadian basketball league.
There, he did much community work as well as playing basketball. He was fairly tall in the US, but in Canada he said he was playing with people close to 7 feet tall. Something he said he had deal with was stereotypes, and breaking through them. Another difficult thing to deal with was language barriers, even though a lot of Canadians spoke English, some didn’t. Jerron chose his number (13) because when his uncle died he was 13. Jerron was asked why he chose Australia next, and his answer was because when he was younger he always wanted to travel, and this seemed like a perfect opportunity.
Jerron has loved all the teams he has played on, and he said the best part of playing with all these different teams was making friendships, and connections. No one knows where Jerron will go next, but he is hoping to one day end up in the NBA, and we will all be waiting.
