Today Sam Grewe came into Write On Sports, to talk about his bone cancer(Osteosarcoma) Before Grewe was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, he was a leading scorer in basketball for his middle school team. “I started having short pains in my right knee, then they became unbearable pains, I couldn’t stand.”
When Grewe was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma on December 24,2011, he had a tumor the size as a fist in his right knee. Grewe’s leg was amputated 3 months into chemo. He had 6 months of rehab and 6 more months of getting used to the new leg.”The leg is like a part of me now.”
While Grewe was in the hospital he said,”I didn’t think I would have a future in sports.” It all changed when in 2012 Grewe was adopted by the Notre Dame football team. “It was a huge step to get me back into athletics.” Grewe said.
In the fall of 2015 Grewe won a gold medal in high jump at the IPC Athletics World Championships. In 2016 Grewe won silver in the Paralympics in Rio. Grewe said that his first impression about Rio was that, “it was intimidating.”
Grewe will be participating in the London 2017 Paralympics . Grewe is hoping to bring back a world record for the high jump and needs only 3 more cm.
