Stephen Brooks interviewed Sophia Sears. It took place at Newcomer Center at Goshen College. It was July 12, 2017.
When Sophia was a freshmen in Goshen College she started playing basketball. She won 3 games in her freshmen year.
“We were very young and still inexperienced.”
In her junior year she played much better. She won 27 games in her junior year. “Picture yourself winning,” she said.
Sophia was a junior and they got in the final four in Sioux City, Iowa. “Hey we are in the Final Four.” Sophia and the team worked really hard to get here. Coach Miller said “She pushed us.” On the way to Iowa it is a 9 hour and 38 minute ride. They all talked and got to know everybody. “We are like sisters on the team.”
Sophia won the Athlete of the Year award. “That was really exciting.” Sophia sat in 8th place with 170 takeaways through her first three years. At Goshen College Sophia has shifted her style of play towards others. “I’ve noticed after games if we worked really hard to compete.” In her Sophomore year she won half her games. Coach Miller was a really good coach to Sophia.
