On July 9th, Write on Sports interviewed Kyle Hufford, the TV director for Goshen College. His program is in a partnership with the college’s radio station, The Globe, and mainly does short features such as GC’s sports highlights and other campus news. Hufford said that the program also works on documentaries; their current one is a project that has gone on for the last three years, but should release sometime at the end of 2019 or the beginning of 2020.
Hufford said that the partnership with GC’s radio station is extremely important, and benefits both programs greatly. The Globe radio lacks one of the most important things that videos have – picture. This means that the radio program relies on the video program to give certain highlights for listeners. This, of course, benefits The Globe’s video side, as the radio is much more established – recently celebrating their 60th anniversary – and is able to advertise for Hufford and his staff.
One big setback that GC’s TV program faces is a limited amount of space, staff, and basically everything else that is necessary to run a major channel. Therefore, a consolidation of resources is necessary. Almost everything they do is done in two small rooms. The first is the directing room, in which they control what is on the screen, what camera’s are filming, and everything that the anchor cannot do during the show. The second room, of course, is where all of the shows are filmed. On one corner of their small room they film Globe Sports, in which they talk about the sports teams of GC. The other corner has a separate backdrop and is where everything else is filmed. To switch between the two shows, the staff just slides all the cameras – which occupy the rest of the room – around.
Hopefully this provided some insight into the unknown, yet important, part of GC’s communication program, The Globe. Though they are making do with a small amount of resources, they play an important role in The Globe’s development.
