A gem for the GC stamp collector:
Alumnus honored in Marshall Islands
With vivid colors suggesting the richness of Pacific island culture,
a stamp depicting Goshen College alumnus Atlan Anien '59 was recently
issued by the Marshall Islands Postal Service to honor the late
legislator in its "Great Marshallese" series.
An esteemed Marshall Islands educator and legislator, Anien began
his secondary education at the United States Navy Interpreter School;
he attended Teacher Training School in 1947, then continued undergraduate
study at Goshen College from 1955 to 1957 and the University of
Hawaii. After teaching elementary school for several years, he was
named Superintendent of Elementary Education in the Marshall Islands.
Anien became interested in politics and was elected to a senatorial
post with the Marshall Islands House of Assembly. He would eventually
serve as speaker of the House of Assembly during his tenure in government.
During the 1960s, Anien was Secretary of the Congress of the Marshall
Islands and Representative of the Congress of Micronesia. In 1977-78,
he was one of the framers of the Marshall Islands constitution.
He died in 1992 at the age of 72. The stamp honoring his service
to the Marshall Islands was issued on July 9; see it on the Web
