Summer Academic Leadership Training (SALT) program June 22, 2010 Photos from: June 2010 Photographer: Jodi H. Beyeler Twenty-two incoming students came to campus for the Summer Academic Leadership Training (SALT) program, from June 14 thru July 1. The three-week program seeks to help first-year students successfully transition from high school to college. The program is for U.S. Latino, African American, Asian American and Native American students. The group took field trips which were structured to strengthen the ethnic identity component of the program. Throughout the program, students live on campus and take either a speech or writing class. In the process, students receive academic credit hours. While SALT gives students a glimpse into the discipline to succeed in college, there is also a community-building aspect and students make new connections with peers. The program is sponsored by the Center for Intercultural Teaching and Learning (CITL) at Goshen College. Associate Professor of English Skip Barnett interacts with students in his writing class.
